Advice To Companies Seeking Promotional Products

What you should be looking for in a distributor

7/19/2023 | Joel Schaffer, MAS, The Take Away

Attributes A Buyer Should Look For In A Promotional Product Distributor Company:

The first decision is the type of “vendor/partner” you require. Is it a commodity supply company that delivers what you want, where you want it, and how you want it? Or, is it a creative agency that brings more value added to the table along with having the ability to simply supply commodities when required? Then you can look to certain attributes or qualities to become your “partner” or simply a vendor. If your company requires several bids before purchasing, then you are probably better off aligning your needs with supply companies as it is not fair to ask for any creative input, take that input and award the order to a “bidder” who did not originate the concept.

Reliability and Reputation: Choose a company with a proven track record of reliability and a positive reputation in the industry. Look for testimonials, reviews, and references from other clients to gauge their dependability. See if they are members of local trade associations, have won awards, and have a positive history.

Proximity: Seek a company that is local and is there in case of an emergency; go to the airport to pick up a shipment and get that one plaque that was never ordered for the award dinner. These are the times when knowing your vendor – one-on-one is critical to what you need to be done.

Graphic Expertise: A company that will learn your graphic needs, store your logo and brands so that they will be able to move it forward as needed, in the format that is needed, and fully understand print and branding different substrates.

Creative: Everyone says, “We’re creative”. Do a deeper dive, look at their portfolio, and prepare a test to compare with others. Creativity is one of the most important attributes you may need.

Shopping Ability: Promotional product companies come in all sizes and experiences. They are in business to make money, but they must deliver the best prices to you from the best source of supply. They must and they do stand behind the 5-star suppliers you want.

A company that brings 5-star fully vetted suppliers to you -- suppliers who will not sell directly to you, but have educated their distributor base to best serve you.
Financially solid: A company that has the financial resources to supply what it says it will supply as it is often its credit that third parties will look at.

A reactive sales rep: One who is your partner in every way and has as much interest in your success as you do. They are not vendors, not suppliers but “partners in success”.
Flexibility and adaptability. A company that can adapt to your ever-changing needs and provides alternate solutions if and when requested to do so.

Quality Products: Your distributor/agency should offer high-quality promotional products that align with your company's brand image and meet your expectations. They bring 5-star manufacturers that do not sell directly to you but work with them to satisfy your company’s needs.

Range of Products: Look for a supplier that offers a diverse range of promotional products to cater to different target audiences and promotional campaigns. A wide selection allows you to choose items that best resonate with your target market.

Customization Options: Check if the supplier provides “in house” customization services.

Excellent Customer Service: A company with a customer-centric approach from top to bottom is crucial. They should be responsive, proactive, and attentive to your needs, addressing any concerns or queries promptly.

Environmental Sustainability: Consider working with a supplier that prioritizes sustainable practices and offers eco-friendly promotional products. This aligns with increasing consumer demand for environmentally conscious businesses.

Strong Communication Channels: A company with clear and effective communication channels simplifies the ordering process. They should be accessible through various communication channels such as phone, email, or online chat.

There are many companies in your area and many more online. Nationally advertised companies are very appealing, however, bigger is not better. If you want a commodity vendor, you can buy it just about anywhere. If you want a partner who is more like a creative agency, do your due diligence.
